Cherngtalay Travel Guide

Ideal for couples or families, plenty of day-time activities and a relaxed beach atmosphere, Choeng Thale or Cherngtalay is a neighborhood that is home to many beautiful beaches. In addition, it boasts being an area full of luxurious resorts, including the exclusive Laguna Phuket development, and is still home to some of the remaining beach clubs on the island. This sympathetic sino-muslim region located in the northwest of Phuket is maybe the island’s most booming area. Choeng Thale was once Phuket’s principal town and it is still housing the oldest temple on the island, the eccentric Wat Phra Nang Sang. The arrival of many new businesses, offering quality dining, shopping and entertainment, all within a stones-throw from high-class accommodation and pristine beaches has put this area on the tourist map. Choeng Thale is a big sub-district and covers 3 popular beaches on the west coat of Phuket: Layan beach, Bamg Tao beach beach and Surin beach.

Layan Beach

Traveling from north to south, this is the first beach you will encounter. Characteristic are the tall pine trees who offer a welcome shade for its Thai and expat visitors under which you find a couple of small restaurants and shops. On the northern end you will notice a small island, Koh Kala and a tiny lagoon. Both are easily explorable by kayak that can be rented nearby.

Bang Tao Beach

This is one of Phuket’s longest beaches and was once a major tin mining area. The production if tin has halted these days, but in a repossessed tin mine you will find Laguna Phuket, one of Asia’s biggest resort complexes. The arrival of trendy beach clubs, luxury properties and high-class dining options have taken away a bit of the laid-back charm that Bang Tao beach used to be known for.

Surin Beach

Maybe one of the island’s most exclusive beaches with 5-star hotels and housing areas for the rich-and-famous, Surin still offers very affordable dining and shopping opportunities. The beach is postcard material with its crystal clear water surrounded by exotic vegetation and virgin white sand. However, be careful during the rainy season when the surf can be quite unpredictable.
